Champions of Marstrand - First U.S. Team

Updated: Jul 29

Chris Poole and the Riptide Racing team make yacht racing history again as they become the first American Team to win Match Cup Sweden! In the events 30 years history no American skipper or team have won the founding event to the World Match Race Tour. With windy and wet conditions most of the week saw the teams in some fast paced and high intensity races.

Chris Poole and team won the Round Robin stage 7-2, earning them a day off before the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Riptide chose to race Switzerland's Eric Monnin and his Capvis Team in a shortened format. Chris and team bested Eric 2-0 in a tough battle. In the finals it was Riptide taking on the home town favorite Johnie Berntsson to see who would be Champions of Marstrand. With a a storm moving across the area, it meant ever changing conditions for both teams. Race 1 went to Riptide Racing after a tight battle in front of the crowds that came out in spite of the rain. Race 2 saw a massive wind shift and breeze increase, this lead to the RC making the courses 3 laps across the harbor. It was a close fight all the way to the finish with big wind shifts and puffs that meant no lead was safe. But the team prevailed and added another piece of yachting history to the Riptide story.

Sailing this week was Luke Payne in Bow, Mal Parker on Trim, Joachim Aschenbrenner on Tactics, and Chris Poole on the Helm. The team is ecstatic with this historic win at one of the most prestigious events in the world. Skipper Chris Poole said "To win this event is amazing but to be the first American is even better. So many U.S. sailors have come to Marstrand and competed to win this event and for us to be the ones is proof of the formula."
