Riptide Wins The 162nd NYYC Annual Regatta
June 13th, 2016
Over the past weekend Riptide Racing won the 162nd New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta Presented by Rolex in the M32 Class. With seven very good team's in attendance we knew it would be a tough regatta. The first day was the around the island race where teams would start and race counter clockwise around Jamestown. The race committee sent the multi-hulls first in what would be a dying westerly for all the boats but us. Unfortunately the around the island race was not our best result of the weekend, but we had a lot of fun sending it down the western shore while trying to thread the needle with the bridge.
Saturday were windward leeward races and that was where the team really came through shinning. Our experience with boundary style racing from the world tour was an incredible asset on the first day as a majority of the teams struggled with boundaries. It was essentially a game of chess from a tactical standpoint and you had to be thinking three maneuvers ahead to be in the game.
Sunday the race officers decided to step away from the boundary style sailing in favor of the more open course style racing. The racing got underway in blustery north westerly breeze with all boat's having a single reef in. The first and only race on Sunday went to us with the now second place team close behind. Race two saw the race committee go with one reef and no gennakers, but that race was soon abandoned after Liftoff capsized just after the reach mark in a big puff. The race committee decided that it was too windy to continue racing so they called it for the day.
Awesome weekend of racing on the M32 with Carson Crain, Trevor Burd, Ian Liberty, and special guest Janel Zarkowsky during the Around the Island Race on Friday. Great to come away with a win at our second ever M32 regatta!
